SPS Components

Stand Alone Power Systems (SPS) vary greatly due to variation in size and run times of differing loads.  There is really no such thing as an “average” system, which is why you need a renewable energy specialist to size and design your system, however the basic SPS system can be divided into several major components:

Solar Module - generates electricity from sunlight

Wind Turbine - generates electricity from wind

Micro-hydro Generator - generates electricity from flowing water

Charge Controller - regulates power to and from batteries

Batteries - store electricity as DC power

Inverter/Charger - changes low voltage DC to high voltage AC power, and vice versa

Monitor and Meters - report system status and power flows

Generator - provides backup AC power

System hardware - module mounting frames, cabling, fuses, breakers, disconnects etc
